Start a Blog About Something You Want to Kick Ass At!

August 27th, 2008
  • Is there a hobby that you want to get into?
  • Is there something you want to become great at?
  • Is there a goal you want to achieve?

Then why not start a blog about it?

You have heard me mention many times that it is easiest to write about something you are passionate about… but that does not mean you have to be an expert at it. What it does mean is you need to have the drive that enables you to research out relevant and worthwhile information for your readers and one of the great things about owning a blog is it forces you to stay up to date on current news in that industry, you need to understand the latest technologies, it makes you accountable to others (your readers) and…

THIS IS THE BEST PART

…the supplies, equipment and training can most likely be TAX FREE!

Blogging about Hobbies

Say you would love to take up woodworking as a hobby… well then why not start a blog about it? This will give you the drive to research out the information and because you will need to get certain tools and equipment in order to understand the hobby and write about it and because this is for your online business, it most likely can be a business expense.

So not only does having the blog encourage you to learn the art of woodworking, it also will help you save a lot of money on the supplies, equipment and training.

How Does it Save You a Lot of Money?

Say a woodworking course costs $700, then the average person would have to earn at least $1000, pay the tax man 30% (could be more or less depending on your current situation) and then you will hopefully have enough money left over for the course BUT if it is a business expense you can pay it directly from your business account and save the $300 in income tax!

Blogging About Travel

Do you love to travel?

Why not start a blog about traveling and you can post about your experiences with different airlines, different rental car companies, different hotels, booking through different online booking services, tourist attractions and of course destinations. You can blog about the planning steps and the experience while it is happening and so on and again… IT CAN BE A BUSINESS EXPENSE!

That means you can pay for the tickets, hotels and even luggage from your business account. Heck you will need to take pictures on your vacations for the blog and so your business will also need to provide you with a  camera and a laptop )

Blogging About a Goal You Want to Achieve?

Say you want to get out of debt, lose weight, run a 10k marathon, raise money for a special cause or become a professional MMA fighter (MMA stands for Mixed Martial Arts)… why not blog about your journey to achieve that goal. What a great incentive to cause you to focus on that goal daily… you will always have it in front of you and you will also have readers that will not only help keep you accountable to your goal but will also encourage you to achieving your goal and again any supplies, equipment or training you need can be a business expense )

So What Can You Start a Blog About?

Karate, diet, book reviews, model cars, painting, weight lifting, home renovations, investing in real estate, scrapbooking, playing guitar, video games, restaurant reviews, restoring cars, hockey, movies, becoming a better golfer, TV shows, camping and the list can go on and on!

So, what would you like to blog about and what comments do you have about this post?

DISCLAIMER –> I am not a lawyer, accountant or tax professional. I am giving you my view point on this topic only and you NEED to discuss this with a tax professional to ensure you are doing everything according to your specific tax requirements.

10 Steps For Gaining 150+ New Subscribers Per Day

August 27th, 2008

One of the hottest topics that I see pop up for new bloggers is the strategy of gaining RSS subscribers. Having subscribers to your blog means repeat traffic, which in turns means more potential revenue for your blog through sponsorships and sales but it also means so much more. It is an indication of authority in your niche, social proof that your blog is worth reading.

I often get emails from readers who are so frustrated because they are putting loads of time into building a quality blog with great information but their readership seems to be going nowhere. They are lucky to gain one or two new readers a day and their blogs are costing them money instead of earning revenue.

Over the past few months I have focused a lot of time testing and tracking different strategies for gaining subscribers and I have been able to consistently grow my daily subscription rate and it keeps getting better and better. Here are the top 10 things that you can start doing right now to explode your subscriber rate.

1. Get Your Own Domain

This is the very first thing I recommend that everyone do if they want to be serious about blogging. I have to be honest and say that I ignore 95% of the blogs that are hosted with services like Blogger or WordPress. I realize that there are a lot of bloggers that use these services but if you look at the large majority of successful bloggers they are hosted on their own domain. As soon as I even see a link that has something like “blogspot” in it, I absolutely cringe. Most of them look like cookie cutter sites and the first thing I think of is SPAM and it immediately gives me the impression that you are not an authority on the topic you are talking about. Even if this is not true, you need to understand that perception is reality for people that do not know you and you only have a few precious seconds to make a solid first impression. It is way too easy to hit the back button on a browser!

2. Give Them a Reason and Time to Trust You

One thing that is hard for people to understand is that a person will subscribe to your blog because they feel that you can fulfill a need that they have and they trust that you are a reliable source. This might be encouragement, advice, prizes or even humor but whatever it is, the majority of subscribers will need to be proven that they can trust you. It is important to be patient and do NOT jam affiliate offers down their throat, do NOT lie to them and you need to understand it takes time to build trust. We are often in such a rush to make money that we lose sight of building a trusting relationships with our readers and we rush into marketing to them.

3. Give an Incentive

This is another one of those questions I get asked frequently. Why are you giving away this eBook away for free? Why is CommentKahuna free.. what is the catch? People have become so tainted because of all the crap floating around and so suspicious of everyone that it amazes them when they actually find out that we are giving away something of value for free.

Why do we do it?

Because the mailing list we have grown from these two product alone is almost 50 000. Yes, you read that right, 50 000 subscribers, which means 50 000 people we can potentially market to. The added benefit is these lists are extremely responsive because they feel like they get value and we have earned the right to email them. Now of course this is not 100% for everyone, but out of all of our lists, the ones that are created through offering a valuable free product or service are always the most valuable.

What are you offering your subscribers?

Create a blog series and then put it into PDF format and offer it as an eBook, put a script on your blog that calculates something for the reader such as what their “healthy weight should be” or “what there $/day goal should be for their business” (hmm, that is a good one… if any of you do this I will link to you but give me credit for the idea), pay someone at Elance or oDesk to create something for you… the list can go on and on. Just make sure it is something that is worth while and related to your niche.

4. Tell Them To and Explain Why They Should!

This is the number one thing I see on peoples blogs that have low subscriber counts… they are expecting the readers to already know why they should subscribe to your blog. This goes hand an hand with the “Give an Incentive”, just by adding “Subscribe” or “RSS Feed” on your blog is not going to get people to subscribe. Give them a reason to and this does not mean just give them an incentive… Tell them exactly why they should subscribe!

If you are giving away a free eBook, do not just say.. “Subscribe and Get My Free eBook”

Would you subscribe for that reason? Of course not!

How about something like… “I Made $##### Last Month and This is the Exact Steps I Used to Do It”

This second one is much more effective, you are telling them why they should subscribe.

5. Put it in Front of Them

You will actually be witnessing a bit of a template change here in the next few days because of this. The current John cow template (that came with it when we bought it) is a great template that gets a lot of mention but it is not exactly the most effective template from a marketing perspective. When people first visit the blog the first thing that stands out above everything else is the header… which is nice but not really something that causes my readers to take action. The header is too big and takes up far too much valuable real estate on the blog. The template that is coming (just getting a few finishing touches), has the header graphic a lot smaller and also puts an opt in box right in the top right hand corner.

The number 1 thing I want my readers to do is notice the opt in offer. Once they opt in then they can read my posts and look at the ads but I want them to first of all subscribe!

Make sure you also put the subscription box front and center! This goes for contests and anything else you offer. Do not just make a post about the incentive, make sure you also have it noticeable to readers no matter what page they visit.

6. Use Aweber and FeedBurner

I love the way these two services work together. FeedBurner first of all tracks your feed stats for you but also formats your feed so it is compatible with more services. Aweber on the other hand allows you to not only offer the subscription via email, which FeedBurner also offers, but allows you to email your subscribers separately and you own the list. With FeedBurner you can not email your subscribers separately and do not actually own the list. Aweber is one of the few services that works perfectly with FeedBurner and tracks your subscribers.

Make sure to install the Feedsmith WordPress plugin so you can be sure FeedBurner catches all your subscribers.

7. Be a guest Blogger

Being a guest blogger on a already high profile blog can go a long way in building up your credibility. The funniest thing with this however is I have had a lot of people ask if they could guest post for me and they have sent me absolute crap for content. Spelling and grammar errors, boring content and nothing really worth while. If you want to be guest blogger then create a worthwhile piece of content and make sure it is 100% unique. Also make sure that at the end of the post you tell the reader how to learn more about you… and sell yourself! Do not just say “Learn More about me at…”, instead give them the benefits they will receive for visiting your blog.

8. Ask for Referrals

Constantly adding fresh and worthwhile content is effective but in my opinion an even more powerful way is through word of mouth recommendations. I can truthfully admit that I have subscribed to a few blogs without even reading a single post but just because someone I trust and respect has recommended them. Do not be afraid to ask your readers to give you testimonials and refer you to their readers. If you have friends that are bloggers, ask for a link… the worse that can happen is they say no.

9. Make it Worth their While to Recommend You

Contests and affiliate programs are both very effective strategies to exploding your subscriber count. Give your readers a reason to promote you that is worth their while. Appease to your readers needs and offer ways they can satisfy those needs by helping you grow your business. You will get a much better response to your “Request for Referrals” by giving them a beneficial reason to do so then you will get by just asking them to do it.

10. Test a Track

This is the absolute most important strategy of all. Make sure that you are doing controlled tests and are tracking the results. Do not simply implement something because someone told you to, instead test it and make sure it works. Every market is different and what works for one will not necessarily be the best for another. I recommend at minimum you install Google Analytics and set goals that track your conversion rates.

So what other tips do you have to add and what is your comments about the 10 I wrote about?

Work Stress Affects Your Overall Life - So Take Time OFF!

August 25th, 2008

Are you happy?

Think about that seriously right now… are you truly happy? I do not mean do you love your job, are you rich or anything like that… I just mean happy.

  • Are you out of shape, do you eat like crap, do you feel like crap?
  • Are you always on the computer, always working, always telling family members, “give me a few more minutes”?
  • Are you stressed out and always worrying about something?

I am sure that these question do not relate to all of you but I can guarantee there are a lot of you that know exactly what I am talking about.

The entrepreneurial spirit is a great thing to have, wanting to grow your business, get out of the rat race and have freedom… BUT AT WHAT COST?

You know there is a funny thing about computers, they can almost mesmerize you in a way that is addictive and this in combination with wanting to get a business running can be a bad combination.

Just the other day, my wife made me laugh when she was doing a blog post for her blog An Aud Life and my youngest daughter was asking her to tuck her in. I heard my wife say 3 times in a row “Just a minute”… and WOW did that make me laugh.

Why?

Because only a few months a go my wife had nothing to do with the computers… she maybe would check email or facebook but spent very little time on it. Now that she is getting into blogging, she suddenly is finding herself getting sucked in. She loves checking for comments, commenting on others blogs, getting involved in her social communities and checking stats.

It felt so good to finally say to her, after the third “in a moment” to say… “HA, I TOLD YOU!”

Having no idea what I was referring to, I explained and she almost could not believe what she had done. I reminded her how she would be so intolerant of it with me because she could not understand why I could not just stop what I was doing. She finally understood and felt terrible and immediately shut the computer down and went to tuck in our daughter.

Now for those that are asking “why did you not tuck her in and let your wife work”.. well I already did, they like us both to tuck them in.

OK, so the point of this little story is to emphasize the point that it is vital to keep priorities in order at all times. We can get so involved into the present moment that we lose complete sight of the big picture and what really matters. We can spend so much time focusing on “Work” or other things that we think are so vital that we miss everything else and later we look back at these moments and absolutely regret missing out on them.

What also happens is we make it even more stressful on ourselves because of guilt… so we exhaust ourselves, do no take care of ourselves and also beat up on ourselves because we know we should not be doing what we are doing!

Do not work yourself to death, do not ignore your spouse or your kids, do not exhaust your mind and body and take some time off.

On Friday I had a situation arise in my office and I truly think I had every reason to use the excuse that I could not go away this weekend because I had to handle it. Well you know what, too bad. I had promised my family we would go away this weekend and so I went. Now believe me, it was not an easy decision but it was the best one.

We had an excellent weekend, it was a tremendous stress relief and you know what… I can truly say… I AM HAPPY!

Enjoy life and keep priorities in order… that is what true success really is.

For me what really brings it all into perspective is this –> What do you want your loved ones to have engraved on your tombstone?

“Your Name Here” was a hard worker who knew how to put work above everything else!

or

“Your Name Here” was a loving husband, dedicated father and lived life to the fullest!

So what are your priorities?

Protect Yourself Before You Start a Contest - Part 6 of An Aud Life dot Com

August 23rd, 2008

First of all I have to come right out and say that I am not a legal professional and any advice I give is not to be construed as anything other then my personal opinion.

Holding a contest can be very fun, it can get you good exposure and is a great way to interact with your readers… the problem is you can also get into a lot of trouble if you are not careful.

A lot of people do not realize how much at risk they are when it comes to their online business and if there are certain things that are not already in place, then holding any type of contest or giveaway can add fuel to a potentially HUGE fire.

Before you even consider announcing your contest, you want to make sure that you have a proper…

  • privacy policy
  • terms of use

…and if you do any ecommerce transactions (such as sell sponsor ads), then a…

  • purchase agreement

Now I realize that some of you might not understand the need for this, after all…

Its Just My Little Blog!

Well I think you would be incredibly surprised to find out what seaming ‘harmless’ and often ’stupid’ little things have got people into HUGE trouble, simply because they did not have a clear privacy policy or terms of use. The way I look at it is why even play with the chance of this happening, take the time and make sure you protect yourself.

TIP –> I also highly recommend, if you have not already done so, that you incorporate your business. In the USA, the state of Nevada is very affordable to get incorporated in and they do not charge any state income tax. The cool thing is you do not even have to be a resident of the USA to do this in Nevada and the tax benefits PLUS the protection it provides is huge. This however is an entire different series of posts to get into.

A good example of how the documents can protect you is with minors. If you offer products, services or contests and someone under the age of 18 years of age participates this can be a potential legal nightmare, especially if you ask for any personal information. This is why on JohnCow I state very clear in the contest rules and it is stated in the privacy policy that anyone below the age of 18 is not permitted.

URGENT –> If your site targets anyone under the age of 18 you will want to understand very clearly the “Children’s Online Privacy Act (COPA)” and consult with a lawyer.

For any of you nay-sayer’s that think I am full of crap or too worried, all I can say is.. I Do Not Care!

It is your business… it is your blog…. it is your life. If you want to risk running a business and a contest without protecting yourself, its your decision… but I think it would be nuts.

NOTE –> These documents do not give you the right to make up rules that cheat or scam people. They are in place to protect you and your business, not to take advantage of others. I am sure I do not need to mention this but you never know.

Another important point is do not just copy and steal someone else’s documents from their site, for example here on JohnCow our documents are purchased through ‘Internet Law Compliance‘ and they are copyright protected. If you want to get the forms for free then there are free options available and if you type in “free privacy policy template” or “free terms of use template” you will find lots of options. Be careful with these though, if you are getting serious with your business, you will really want to consider doing this right. The nice thing about using ‘Internet Law Compliance‘ is they also have a lot of training material they provide you that is very eye opening.

So now I have a question for you… is your blog or web site protected?

In the next post I am going to cover setting up the rules of the contest and then we should be able to launch it at http://www.anaudlife.com!

Traffic Travis Keyword Research - Diamonds in the Rough

August 22nd, 2008

IMPORTANT –> This is the updated lesson to reflect the upgrades within the new TrafficTravis software. This lesson was originally posted May 24th (WOW 3 months ago already).

There are a few other updates and SUPER COOL surprise in store that all JC subscribers will get for free and will make your keyword reseach MUCH easier! My goal is to have everything out to you by Wednesday.. that means fully updated ebook and new cool tool!

This lesson is a continuation of the previous lesson Keyword Research - Show me the Money… Words that is

Now, that you have a large list of keywords, you will want to filter out the hopeful “Diamonds”… these are the words that are actively being used by advertisers and the tool of choice (in our opinion) is Traffic Travis. We almost passed over this tool because in our opinion the name and logo are cheesy (sorry Mark, but they are). It was a good thing however that we got to know Mark about a year ago and he walked us through this tool and we have been hooked ever since.

We need to make very clear right now, this is not a paid review or a requested review for a favor or anything else like that. As stated in the initial lesson, we will be sharing paid tools that we use and this is one of those tools we use and we personally love. After you finish reading this, you may agree or you may have a tool we do not know about that is just as good and you can use that. Just wanted to make that clear to everyone )

How to Dig for Hopeful Diamonds with Traffic Travis:

Step 1 –> Once you have Traffic Travis, open it up select “PPC Analysis”

Step 2 –> Click on the “Add Project” button

Step 3 –> Name your project and select the country location you want Google to use. I recommend you leave it to the United States unless you specifically want to target a different country.

Step 4: Select the “Keywords” tab in the project box and then select “import keywords”. Now paste your keywords from the previous “Keyword Lesson” into the form and click on start.

Step 5: The keywords will now be imported into the main table and you will now want to click on “Start Update” and TrafficTravis will now search Google for each individual phrase and get a list of the sites that are currently advertising with AdWords for that term.

Step 6: TrafficTravis will process each keyword and it is important that you watch the status area and the results. If you notice that suddenly the results change from returning results to now getting all 0’s then Google may have put a temporary block on your IP and this means the have enabled an image verification (captcha) system which prevents Traffic Travis from gathering the data. I recommend you do not have Traffic Travis run more then 1000 words at a time.

To check if Google has implemented a restriction, simply go to google search and try to use the search engine. If you get a image verification to use the search, then you will need to wait until Google removed the restriction or employ the use of a proxy service.

Once the status shows complete you can now go to the next step.

Step 7: Now click on the “Top sites for keywords” tab and then click the “Fetch Sites” button. TrafficTravis will now analye the data from the previous step and display the results you are after.

Step 8: In the results click the “Found” column to sort by highest to lowest. This number represents the total number of keyword that this domain was found advertising. Click on the rows that relate to the market of your niche and it will display the keywords in the right hand “Matching Keywords” box. Click save and name the file “keyword1″.

Repeat this step for the top 5 to 10 results of the most relevant domains to your niche and have the highest returned results and make sure to save each file as a unique name so you do not overwrite each one, so for example the next matching keyword batch save would be “keyword2″.

Step 9: Now take the 5 to 10 files you saved and copy and past the results into one file, so to make one list out of the 5 to 10 individual lists.

Step 10 –> Now go back to TrafficTravis and go to the “Keyword Sorter” in the “ABC Keyword Tools” section. Since there will be duplication in our current list we are going to want to clean it up a bit.

Once you have removed the duplicates you will now have a clean list to work with. Delete any extra stuff that may have been included that you do not want included. Now save this as your good keyword list.

Now we have filtered down our list from a many keywords with many “poor” terms, to a smaller more focused list that contains words you know are directly focused to your topic but also are words you know people are actually paying money to advertise with. This is the start of finding the diamonds… but we are not there yet ;)

Start of Added BONUS Topic –> You better say you love us after this little tip we give you )

If you are just starting a new site, this is a great time to find one now, using the keywords you filtered out using Traffic Travis and here is a tip that you are going to LOVE!

This really should be a separate post but we are too lazy right now to do that

–> Get a Domain Name

A very easy and extremely effective way to find a good domain is to use the free “Bulk Register” tool provided by GoDaddy. If you do not have a free Godaddy account, you need to get one now at http://www.godaddy.com

Step 1 –> Log into your Godaddy account and select “Domains” –> “Bulk Register”

Step 2 –> Enter the keywords in the text box provided, select “.com”, enter the “Access Code” and select “GO”. You can select the other extension options if you want.

Step 3 –> Godaddy will now go through your list of keywords and list for you the domains that are available that match your keywords. The results will initially show errors, but scroll down to see which domains are available. You should be able find extremely good domain names to use that will be keyword rich and very targeted to your market.

<– End of Added BONUS Topic (Hope you liked it)

Initial Content Keywords

Now that we have our domain, and our initial filtered list of words, we still have some work to do. To truly find the real “Diamonds” from the hopefuls is we are going to have to use “affiliate elite” and run it on a schedule for 2 weeks, we go into detail on this in the next keyword lesson (sorry).

Before we do that however, we want to get keywords for initial site content. We do not want to waste time while waiting for Affiliate Elite, so this is a perfect time to grab 20 or so terms from your list to create your blogs initial content.

Personally our results have proven over and over again that the best results is to not go live with a blog until you have 25 articles or more. We usually target 50 to start with but that is not always possible due to time constraints.

The good thing is we know that with the keyword we currently have that some people are advertising with them, the problem is that Traffic Travis only gives us a snap shot of one day. That means that the words are being advertised with right now but they might NOT be tomorrow because they are no good… which is why we will use “Affiliate Elite” to see if words are used consistently for 14 days.

That said, using some of these words now is better then nothing, at least we can see they are being used by some and the odds are that a lot of the words you select will be good words.

Step 1–> Log back into your AdWords account and go to “Tools” –> “Traffic Estimator” and copy all the keywords into section #1. Then enter 100 in section 2, leave section 3 blank, do not change section 4A and select “All Countries and Territories” in section 4B and select “Continue”

Step 2 –> Google will now display all the keywords and their suggestion of the amount of traffic you can expect for each word. You need to understand that this number represents what Google says you would get with the number one AdWords ad… NOT the number one organic listing, which gets much more traffic then AdWords. Click on the “Estimated Click/Day” so to sort the information from highest traffic to lowest.

Step 3 –> Looking at the list, you are now going to want to select 20 or more keyword phrases. A good rule of thumb is to initially look at the words that are three words in length and have bids between $0.50 and $2.00. The reason is this shows that these words are being advertised on but are not packed full of competitors, which keeps the costs lower. Always start from top to bottom so you can be sure you are getting keywords with some traffic.

IMPORTANT –> Your list might not have any words under $2.00, if that s the case then ignore the cost rule… if there are however, look at those.

Step 4 –> Now you are going to take each keyword phrase and go to google to check out the terms competition. Enter the term in google with the allintitle filter. To do that simply enter the following…

allintitle:”your keyword phrase”

What you are looking for here is the amount of competition this term has and a good indicator of that is the amount of sites in Google that have that keyword phrase in their title. This is not an exact science and there are some who argue that this is not a true picture but from our experience it works and we like to use what we know works (which we recommend you get in the mindset of doing, do not just listen to others but find out what works for yourself). By using the allintitle, we see if a word is overwhelmed with competitors or is easily dominated.

Good guidelines for the “allintitle” results are…

  • Less than 15 000 results = Needs to have lots of traffic potential to be worth it. Not recommended for the majority of this content since you will have to focus a lot of link building on this. If you have 2 or 3 that fall in here that is fine but try to have the majority 7000 or less.
  • Less than 7000 results = Good - Can be dominated with good optimization and focused link building
  • Less than 1000 results = Great - Easily dominated

NOTE –> These are just our guidelines, they are what work for us. Do NOT argue with us if you agree with them or not, they work for us and so there )

Step 5 –> Repeat this process until you have a list of at least 20 keyword phrases with OK or better for competition. These are the keywords that we are going to build our blog on initially.

IMPORTANT –> Make sure to only use phrases that make sense grammatically as you will need to be able to create content around these phrases.

Next Keyword Lesson –> Start Up the Diamond Digger

Remember, the problem we have now is that we have words for our content but we do not really know if they are “Profitable”. We have a good guess because we know that as of right now, people are advertising on them but we only know that as of right now they are being used. Yesterday they might not have been and tomorrow they might now be and what we want to know is what keywords are being consistently used for at least 10 to 14 days by the same advertisers. These are the words that we can be sure somebody is making money with and are fantastic words to build content around, especially affiliate based content.

Talk To Us –> Did you Like this Post? If so please let me know, it i good motivation for us to keep this up )
